When talking about local delicacies in Nagasaki, besides the commonly seen “Champon noodles”, “Kakuni” (braised pork belly) is also a must-try dish for many travelers. During the Edo period, Nagasaki served as a crucial port for international trade, especially with China. As Chinese merchants and students arrived, they brought with them the dish “Dongpo Pork”, which gradually adapted to Japanese culinary styles over time and evolved into what is now known as “Kakuni”. Typically, Kakuni is served in a steamed bun, similar to the Taiwanese “Gua Bao”. However, in recent years, some restaurants have tried different approaches to present this traditional dish — one of them being the “Kakuni Cutlet”.…

Ippei Honten, established in 1957, is a well-known ramen shop in Kokura and a nostalgic place many locals have grown up with. During meal times, the restaurant is always packed with customers, creating a lively atmosphere that reflects how beloved it is by the community. Ippei Honten – Location and Atmosphere Ippei Honten is located near JR Kokura Station, making it very convenient to access. Although the exterior is a bit aged, the strong aroma of pork bone broth and the bold signage make it easy to spot. The interior is compact and clearly shows its age, reflecting a nostalgic atmosphere of a traditional Japanese eatery. Condiments and utensils are…

When it comes to iconic local dishes in Nagasaki, champon (ちゃんぽん) is probably the first thing that comes to mind for many people. Champon originated during the Meiji period (late 19th to early 20th century). It features a rich broth made from pork and chicken bones, enhanced by stir-fried vegetables – a hallmark of champon. Today, many restaurants in Nagasaki specialize in champon, each offering different ingredients and cooking…

Nagasaki is one of Japan’s earliest open ports and has long been a hub for East-West cultural exchange. During the Edo period, it served as a major trading point between China and Japan. As many Chinese immigrants settled in the area, communities gradually formed—Shinchi Chinatown being one of the most iconic examples. Today, Shinchi Chinatown is one of the most recognizable commercial districts in Nagasaki, with many Chinese restaurants nearby. Unryutei, the restaurant I visited this time, is among the more well-known establishments in the area and has even been featured in Japan’s popular gourmet site “Tabelog’s Top 100 Restaurants.” Unryutei Doza Branch – Atmosphere & Interior The main Unryutei…
